Barrier coatings are specialized coating materials designed to form a protective barrier, primarily used to prevent the penetration of oils, moisture, and other liquids into the surface of paper-based products. Barrier coatings are typically made from materials such as polymers, waxes, and natural resins, forming a dense thin film that effectively blocks oils, moisture, and gases, enhancing the functionality of paper-based products. Compared to traditional oil repellents, barrier coatings generally provide stronger waterproof and oil-resistant protection, making them suitable for higher-end packaging applications.

Fluorine-containing oil-resistant agents are composed of fluorinated compounds (such as fluoralkyl compounds) and exhibit excellent oil-resistant properties. These agents form a strong hydrophobic film on the surface of paper, effectively preventing oil penetration and maintaining long-lasting oil resistance. Fluorine-containing oil-resistant agents are suitable for applications that require high oil resistance, particularly in packaging greasy foods and high-end packaging materials.

Silicone-based oil repellent agents are primarily composed of organosilicon compounds (such as silanes or siloxanes), offering excellent oil and water resistance. These agents form a transparent siloxane film on the surface of paper-based packaging, effectively preventing oil penetration and maintaining cleanliness and hygiene. In addition to providing good oil resistance, silicone-based oil repellents can also enhance the strength and toughness of the paper.

  • Excellent Oil and Water Resistance: Silicone-based oil repellents form a hydrophobic film that effectively prevents the penetration of both oils and water.
  • Environmentally Friendly and Fluorine-Free: Free from fluorine compounds, meeting environmental protection requirements, making them especially suitable for food packaging with high environmental standards.
  • High Temperature Resistance: Silicone-based oil repellents have good high-temperature resistance, allowing them to withstand temperature variations during baking and high-temperature food packaging processes.
  • Increased Paper Strength: In some cases, silicone-based oil repellents can improve the mechanical strength and tear resistance of paper products, enhancing the durability of the packaging.

Wax-based oil repellent agents are primarily made from natural or synthetic waxes (such as paraffin, beeswax, plant wax, etc.), offering strong hydrophobic and oil-resistant properties. These agents typically form a protective film on the surface of pulp, preventing oil penetration. Compared to silicone-based oil repellents, wax-based oil repellents are generally more cost-effective, making them suitable for mid-to-low-end packaging products.

  • Natural and Environmentally Friendly: Wax-based oil repellents are often made from natural waxes (such as beeswax or plant wax) or synthetic waxes, offering better environmental friendliness compared to other chemicals.
  • Efficient Oil Resistance: Effectively prevents oil substances from penetrating paper, keeping packaging clean, particularly suitable for greasy food packaging.
  • Lower Cost: Compared to silicone-based and fluorine-based oil repellents, wax-based oil repellents are more affordable to produce, making them ideal for mass production and cost-sensitive markets.
  • Biodegradable: Many wax-based oil repellents have good biodegradability, meeting green environmental protection and sustainability requirements.
